One of Mexico City’s defining characteristics is undoubtedly its markets and the number of places where you can enjoy an authentic dining experience.
There is, however, one particular place where flavours, colours and customs all come together, a paradise catering mostly to chefs, gastronomy students and foodies that’s a must on your next visit. San Juan Market is known the world over for its unbelievable amount of delicacies, which include deer, lion, wild boar and crocodile meat, insects like grasshoppers, Maguey worms, beetles, chicatana ants, crayfish, Madagascar cockroach, pheasant, fried tarantula, scorpions, among many other weird, exotic and unusual products.
Originally called Ernesto Pugibet Market, this 150-year-old market is undoubtedly one of the top markets in Mexico City, if not the entire country. You’ll find a wide range of products from other Mexican states, Europe, Asia and the Americas, and many of the vendors also serve local dishes that would wow even the most discerning foodie. Think tapas, fish stalls selling carpaccio, burgers made from exotic meats, insect tacos, European cheese, wild Tajamanil mushrooms and delicious star fruit, passion fruit and dragon fruit.
During your tour of the market, you’ll be able to witness the constant movement of products, and the coming and going of the vendors in harmony with the city’s sounds. Bring your appetite and plenty of cash as prices are not exactly cheap, but then again, this will undoubtedly be an experience to remember.
