There’s a small town surrounded by fantastic beaches in Canada called Tofino. Over the years, it’s managed to position itself as a global key point for surfers who want to practise or learn the sport, and it’s also home to one of the leading surf schools in the country, Surf Sister.
Surf Sister started out in 1999 with the idea to increase the number of women involved in the sport, make them feel included and more confident. As of today, they’ve managed to bring together more than 30 women instructor to the programme. They only accept women instructors, although the classes are open to women, children, teenagers and men.
What makes the school stand out from the many others in Tofino is the commitment and dedication the instructors bring to the table, and the opportunity to share their passion for the sport is what pushes them to continue teaching.
Surf Sister and Shelter Restaurant created “Queen of the Peak” to showcase surfing as an extreme sport for women. It’s an annual 3-day championship where women surfers from different areas can take part in the contest to show their talent, passion and commitment to the sport.
The school offers camps from two to five days, private and group lessons, and all the programs they manage are specifically designed to cater for all ages, gender and physical fitness levels.
The girls couldn’t have chosen a better location than Tofino to set up the school, thanks to its beautiful beaches, woodland, and weather, its fantastic waves make it a great place to learn to surf and also have a great time. Tofino is also a small town with a small population, and this helps to create a unique connection between the sea and nature, along with the perfect learning method for beginners.
Apart from the charm of Tofino itself, the knowledge shared by the Surf Sister instructors is really something of immense value for the town. Their contribution is extremely vital for both the community and women surfers, who the instructors encourage to give it their all in every training session.
