The 13th edition of the Mexico International Short Film Festival, popularly known as Shorts Mexico, takes place in Mexico City from September 5-12, and will then go on a national and international tour.
The capital city of the Mexican Republic not only promotes art through museums and exhibitions but also through developing the cradle of cinematography: the short film. The industry started out with this format, and, over time, extended the duration in productions with greater feeling and emotion.
This is how the festival began, which this year celebrates the 13th edition with 11 sections of national and international screenings in emblematic venues, diverse cultural centres, forums and cinemas spread across the city, as well as the Cineteca Nacional.
Some of the sections participating this year include animation, documentary, fiction, neomex (new proposals and Latin American and International competitions. In addition to the 11 categories in the Mexican competition: Best Short Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Script, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Music, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design, which aim to recognise the work of all those involved in each work.
Previous editions of Shorts Mexico saw more than 20,000 spectators attend and close to 2000 entries submitted in the selections.
This year’s edition has 381 shorts participating in the competition. Almost 54% of them are Mexican with the rest coming from more than 40 countries. The winners are selected by the jury, which is made up of 33 leading representative figures from the film industry.
This will be the first edition to have a digital photo exhibition with portraits of those involved in the festival. There will also be conferences at the Faculty of Cinema to discuss topics such as production, copyright, script, among others.
This event is inclusive, diverse, dynamic and free, and definitely an excellent opportunity to get to know the national and international film scene and what’s on offer.
