Tunisia welcomes in spring by opening the gates to Africa

Combining heritage, nature in its purest state, the exoticism of a culture with three thousand years of history and countless experiences to suit all tastes, Tunisia is now emerging as an excellent destination for travel in springtime.

From the sun’s reflection on the crystal-clear waters of its beaches to the sound of the breeze that cradles the desert dunes, Tunisia opens the door to a fascinating age-old culture with history, exoticism, unique natural spaces and spectacular landscapes.

With the arrival of good weather, it’s the perfect destination for a different spring getaway, and the best of all is that it’s less than two hours by plane from Barcelona or Madrid.

The Mediterranean country now has all the ingredients to become a reference destination in experiences and is now following a new model of tourism that was unveiled during the last edition of FITUR to boost the country’s tourism industry.

In addition to the treasures of the desert and its beaches, numerous themed tours, countless cultural and sporting activities make up the tourism offering in this exciting corner of North Africa.

Following the footprints of the past

Visiting Tunisia is like travelling back in time to the glorious era of the Carthage, whose archaeological site is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it’s not the only place in this Mediterranean country that possesses this distinction. The Medina of Tunis, also on the UNESCO list, is home to several important buildings, including the Al-Zaytuna Mosque, the Zitouna Mosque, the Sidi Bou Krissan Hospital and the Dar el Bey and Dar ben Abdallah palaces.

The El Djem Amphitheatre, the ancient Punic city of Kerkouane and its necropolis, the Medina of Sousse and the cities of Kairouan and Dougga (Thugga) are also well worth a visit.

For history lovers, there’s the possibility to explore all the Tunisian sites and monuments classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

An oasis at the gateway to Africa

Tunisia is full of diverse natural beauty from its 1148 kilometres of coast to the very depths of the desert. The north of the country is surrounded by blue waters and lush vegetation, with places like Kalâat el-Andalous beach that are great for water sports and kitesurfing.

The landscape is wilder in the south with the enchanting desert scenery and oases awash with palm trees, as is the case of Djerba island, the country’s beach destination par excellence.

Hiking and soul-searching in the desert

Inland, the Tunisian Sahara Desert is a peaceful and serene haven that in springtime allows visitors to discover a magical world of dunes, rugged mountains and green oases. The perfect place for some meditation!

Another option in this part of Tunisia is to explore the Dahar massif, which is found in the lesser-known Berber region in the southeast of the country; from Beni Khedache to the mythical village of Zamour until arriving at the lunar landscapes of Matmata. This provides for a unique experience where you can contemplate the star-filled sky at night with a warm cup of freshly brewed tea in one of the distinctive troglodyte underground houses.

An album full of experiencesias

In addition to the hiking and cultural routes, numerous themed tours, including wine routes, film routes and countless outdoor activities are all a part of the Tunisian offering.

It’s also worth mentioning the Tras las huellas de Magón wine route which follows the trail of the Carthaginian agronomist Magón highlighting the wine and gastronomic traditions of the country, the film circuits that visit scenes from the Hollywood blockbusters Star Wars, The English Patient, Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and Black Gold with Antonio Banderas, and the Ultra Trail El Djerid 100km and the Carthage Race Marathon, which are putting Tunisia in the running spotlight at an international level.
