Iberia’s committed to digitalisation and is bringing virtual reality on board its A350-900 flights. Passengers can enjoy virtual reality games, tourist guides and movies on the Madrid-New York route.
Every time we travel, we tend to check out the place we’re visiting beforehand. Especially if we imagine diving in the Red Sea. Now, you can immerse yourself in those waters on route to the destination.
Entertainment for long flights
After the trial period, Iberia and Inflight VR, which is a company creating a virtual reality ecosystem for the aviation industry, have developed a new entertainment offer on long-haul flights using Pico G2 virtual reality headsets.
Inflight VR’s founder and CEO, Nikolas Jaeger wants to be able to change the experience of passengers on board a plane. Virtual reality will allow passengers to be more than just mere observers, they’ll also be able to discover and look around the city they’re travelling to before arriving at their destination.
The entertainment system includes headphones, glasses and a variety of incredible experiences such as diving with sharks, playing video games, seeing tourist destinations like Machu Pichu in your mind or watching movies.
The virtual reality experience has been authorised by the State Aviation Safety Agency (AESA) for A350-900 and A330-200 airplanes. Using these device doesn’t cause any alterations in the flight systems and allows the company greater accessibility when setting up new routes.
What’s next? Augmented reality
Iberia aims to launch an augmented reality app soon that will allow passengers to measure their luggage with the camera on their phone and check from home if the luggage complies with the company’s standards.
